Popular ways to split an image

Most people split images for social media. The presets cover the usual grids, and you can type your own numbers for anything else, up to 10 rows and 10 columns. The lines start out evenly spaced, but you can drag any of them on the preview when you want one piece bigger than the others.

Rows x columnsPiecesTypical use
1 x 22A two part post, or separating the left and right half of a picture
1 x 33A panoramic carousel (type 1 and 3 in the boxes)
2 x 24A four piece puzzle or a simple photo set
3 x 39An Instagram profile grid
4 x 416A large poster you want to print in sections

Inside the ZIP, the pieces are named piece-1, piece-2 and so on, counting left to right and then row by row. Instagram shows your newest post first, so for a profile grid you upload the pieces from the last one to the first. Need to join pieces back together later? The combine tool does that.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is this image splitter really free?

Yes, completely free, with no limit on how many images you split. There is no account required and no watermark added to your files.

How do I download all the pieces?

All the pieces are bundled together automatically into a single ZIP file, which downloads when you click Download All as ZIP.

Is my image uploaded to a server?

No. Everything happens directly in your browser using your device’s own processing power. Your image never leaves your computer or phone.

Can I choose a custom grid instead of a preset?

Yes. Type any number of rows and columns you want, up to 10 by 10.

What image formats are supported?

You can upload JPG, PNG, or WebP files, and each piece downloads in the same format as your original.

Will each piece be exactly the same size?

By default, yes, or very close to it. The lines start evenly spaced, and if the dimensions do not divide perfectly, a piece may be a pixel or two larger or smaller than the others. If you drag the lines, the pieces follow wherever you put them.

How do I split an image for an Instagram grid?

Choose the 3 x 3 preset, click Split Image and download the ZIP. Then post the pieces one at a time, starting with piece-9 and finishing with piece-1, so that piece-1 ends up in the top left corner of your profile.

How do I split a photo into a panorama carousel?

Type 1 in the rows box and the number of slides you want in the columns box, for example 3. Split the image and upload the pieces to your carousel in order, starting with piece-1.

How do I split an image into 4 equal parts?

Use the 2 x 2 preset. You get a quarter of the image in each file: top left, top right, bottom left and bottom right, numbered piece-1 to piece-4.

Does splitting lower the quality of the image?

No resizing happens. Each piece is cut straight from the original pixels. PNG pieces stay lossless, and JPEG or WebP pieces are saved at high quality.

Can I move the split lines to make uneven pieces?

Yes. After you upload an image, drag any yellow line on the preview to move it. On a phone, touch and drag the round handle. A line cannot cross the one next to it. Changing the number of rows or columns, or pressing Reset lines to equal, puts every line back to even spacing.

How do I cut an image into two parts at a specific spot?

Choose the 1 x 2 preset for a left and right cut, or 2 x 1 for a top and bottom cut. Drag the line to the exact place you want, then click Split Image.
